Portraits of Reality in Our Own Words

How would the world be different if the marginalized had a microphone to broadcast their message?  What if those with the power and resources to make a difference had the bandwidth to listen?

Faces of Witness consists of a dozen large portraits created using thousands of hand-drawn words from each person’s own powerful testimony.  The portrait series amplifies the voices of extraordinary “ordinary” people from El Salvador, asking viewers to take time and listen to the wisdom these people have to share.

The art exhibit – in conjunction with the accompanying workshop and supplemental materials – challenges viewers to look more closely, to scrutinize beyond first impressions, and to truly begin seeing the mosaic of reality that faces all of us, whether in the global North or the global South.

Words taking form — the process of creating a portrait

Faces of Witness is about vision. It looks intently at the past and present to gain wisdom for the future. It searches across the boundaries dividing economics, politics, culture, faith, and geography to understand more fully the meaning of human rights.  Most importantly, Faces of Witness shares visions of a better world and sheds light on how one can act to realize a more just and dignified society.
